Project: Kalamazoo County Gull Road Courts

Design Firm: Tower Pinkster – Kalamazoo

Lighting Designer: Shane Evens

Description: As part of their 25-year master plan, Kalamazoo County acquired a vacant parcel of land adjacent to the Juvenile Home with an overall vision to relocate family-related judicial services and create a campus that improves operations through efficiencies in space, design and function.  Tower Pinkster worked closely with the County and programming/design partner HOK, to incorporate Family and Probate Courts, Friends of the Court and Prosecutor\’s offices.  The design aimed to create a building which conveys significance and openness to visitors.  Exterior building materials were carefully selected to tie to the adjacent Juvenile Home while blending with the surrounding neighborhood.

Lighting Design Criteria: The architectural ceiling elements used for this project are being reinforced and complemented by the use of very clean lines of crisp LED lighting.  Of primary concern to the lighting designer was to create a lighting appearance that flowed from space to individual space.  Subtle changes were used in the lighting to break up the longer spaces.  Great care and consideration was paid to the lighting control throughout the building with ease of use and flexibility in mind.
